MELBOURNE, Aug 9 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's leadership is vital to help Malaysia tackle the many new challenges it faces, Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said Sunday.
Hishammuddin, who is also Home Minister said: "When Datuk Seri Najib took office, he was conscious that his government could no longer work in the old environment with old mindsets.
"He decided the government had to focus on what the Malaysian public care the most about and as prime minister he had to keep his government focused on priorities," Hishammuddin told the Melbourne Umno Club.
He said Najib had to immediately make fresh and creditable but often difficult policy decisions and "his government has to be seen to be fair to all. One that needs to walk the talk (and) able to make bold but at the same time doable decisions".
"Otherwise, three years down the road the vision will remain only a concept and we face the electorate at our own peril," he said.
Hishammuddin said the 1Malaysia concept was pillared by three main thrusts of comprehensive acceptance as opposed to more tolerance, nationhood as opposed to many different pockets within a nation, and social justice for all irrespective of colour, religion and background.
He said it was "not a nice time to be prime minister and not a nice time to administer" because of the global financial turmoil and concerns about climate change and global terrorism.
"But it is also an exciting time, and we in Malaysia are up to it and are confident with the support and understanding of the public, we will succeed," he said.
