KUANTAN, Aug 15 (Bernama) -- Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is confident that voters in Permatang Pasir will vote rationally come polling day on Aug 25.
The Umno deputy president said although many were claiming that the area was a PAS stronghold, he believed that the people understood the current political scenario and make a wise decision.
"During the campaign for the Manik Urai by-election (last month), people said PAS was strong in the area but in the end, the voters voted rationally. I believe the same can be said of Permatang Pasir voters," he told reporters here.
He was asked to comment on Barisan Nasional's (BN) chances in the by-election following the announcement of candidates both by BN and PAS yesterday.
BN is fielding Permatang Pauh Umno secretary Rohaizat Othman, 38, while PAS is represented by its Penang commissioner, Salleh Man.
"Most of the voters in the area are young voters. We will use the same approach as in Manik Urai. I hope that the voters will support our candidate. He has the qualification, holds syariah law degree and maintains good relations with the people.
"I hope the wind of change which is sweeping across the country will also blow in Permatang Pasir," he said.
On Permatang Pasir being a PAS stronghold, Muhyiddin said, "We have won in the area previously. If it is a PAS stronghold, we would not have won."
What was important, he said, was for the BN to explain the 1Malaysia concept to the voters.
He also said that voters knew the oppositions' political style, including in Penang. "They can see for themselves that the opposition parties, even in Penang, are facing internal problem."
"I am sure they also know what is happening in Selangor where leaders differ on many issues. I believe the voters are also aware of what the BN has done to help the people.
"The BN machinery will explain this further so that the people understand what is happening," he said.
Muhyiddin also said that Umno and BN would be more proactive in countering issues raised by opposition parties and would no longer adopt a defensive mode.
He said Umno and BN would not compromise on issues which could undermine racial relations.
"Umno leaders will continue to voice out to make sure the people understand how important it is to defend the harmonious relations among them," he said.
Earlier Muhyiddin performed the simultaneous opening of three Umno delegates' meetings namely for Kuantan, Indera Mahkota and Paya Besar divisions at the Sukpa Indoor Stadium in Bandar Indera Mahkota, here. -- BERNAMA
