Nik Aziz's Statement Inconsistent, Shameful, Say Umno Veterans

KOTA BAHARU, Aug 13 (Bernama) -- The Kelantan Umno Veterans Council has found PAS spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat's stance in not criticising DAP leaders for insulting Islam to be inconsistent and driven by political interest.

Its chairman Datuk Mohd Rozali Isohak said Nik Aziz's statement on the issue yesterday was inconsistent with his previous statements which indicated that those who insulted Islam should be opposed.

"I don't understand the Tok Guru's (Nik Aziz) stance now. His comments of late have been spontaneous and inconsistent, confusing and embarrassing to Muslims," he said today when asked to comment on Nik Aziz's reported statement.

The Kelantan Menteri Besar had said he would not condemn DAP leaders who insulted Islam on the basis that they did not have much understanding of Islam.

Instead, he blamed the attitude of certain Muslim leaders who did not adhere to Islamic teachings, thus threatening the sanctity of the religion.

Rozali, who is a former Kelantan deputy menteri besar, said PAS' refusal to cooperate with Umno in setting up a unity government stemmed from Nik Aziz's own attitude of regarding Umno as "haram" (forbidden by religion).

"Even having a discussion with Umno is deemed haram by Tok Guru, but anything goes with the DAP.

"In light of this, I pray to God that Nik Aziz be shown the right path as he seems to be placing political interest above religion," he said. -- BERNAMA
