Penang BN chairman Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon said only the state government was responsible to find a solution to the problem faced by the residents in the area whose houses were ordered to be demolished.
"They are very eager to become heroes, let them be," he said when approached by reporters after opening the Kedah Gerakan delegates conference at Tanjung Bendahara, here today.
He said this when asked to comment on the tense situation at Kampung Buah Pala, Penang yesterday when a housing developer tried to demolish 23 units of houses there to make way for a housing project.
However, attempts by workers from the housing developer to enter the area were blocked by residents who had gathered at Jalan Kaki Bukit, about 100 metres from the entrance to the area since early morning, and shouting at the workers concerned.
Earlier in his speech, Koh, who is also the Gerakan president, called on party members support fully the 1Malaysia concept introduced by the Prime Minister and reminded them not to be involved in negative culture such as street demonstrations.
"Anyone who has any opinion or suggestion on a particular issue, should voice their opinion in a proper manner and respect social harmony," he said.
At the conference, the Taman Muda Gerakan branch tabled a motion calling on the Education Ministry to use the English language in the teaching of Mathematics and Science beginning from Form 1.
Meanwhile, the Kuala Kedah Gerakan division tabled a motion urging the government to abolish the Internal Security Act (ISA) as it was feared that the Act might be abused by certain quarters. -- BERNAMA
