GEORGE TOWN: Illegal moneylenders are using tour companies and tuition centres as fronts for their activities, police said.
Some shops selling electrical products were also said to be used as fronts for their operation.
Penang Commercial Crime Investigation Department head Assistant Commissioner of Police Roslee Chik said these tactics were being used by Ah Long to prevent the authorities from detecting their operations.
The tactics were uncovered after police received several complaints and raided several premises which claimed to be offering tour packages, tuition and electrical goods, he said.
Roslee said a special team had been set up to curb such activities.
Since the team was formed in July this year, police had conducted 15 raids where, at eight of the premises, money lending operations were being conducted without a valid licence, he said.
Police also identified 24 individuals, including a Datuk, believed to be involved in the illegal moneylending business. -- NST
